ScrollPeriod Jewelry
Man Luo’s study of jewelry history began at the Rhode Island School of Design, where she explored global jewelry traditions from prehistory to the present. Drawing on the collections of the RISD Museum, she developed an approach to jewelry history grounded in material culture. Her undergraduate research focused primarily on art jewelry and contemporary craft.
While pursuing her MA in Fine and Decorative Art and Design at Sotheby’s Institute of Art, Luo concentrated on jewelry history, exploring subjects including Carlo Giuliano’s engagement with the Pre-Raphaelite movement, the influence of British colonialism in Asia on Victorian and later pearl jewelry, and Nordic design and silver jewelry. Her master’s dissertation examined the influence of Hollywood’s Golden Age on the global jewelry industry.
Today, Luo works with historical jewelry on a daily basis, with particular expertise in Western jewelry dating from approximately 1880 to 1960.
Fine Gemstones
